Why should I train at JD's DOJO?
Hi! My name is Renato. Welcome to my DOJO!
I believe Martial Arts and a good mentor can help shape you and/or your child in so many levels. Like an ice-berg, there is so much beneath the surface that you don't realise is there.
On the surface, at JD's DOJO martial arts school, you learn a combination of self-defence training awareness/techniques, boxing skills, Muay Thai based kicking techniques, and learning how to manage yourself when on the ground. The ultimate goal being that you/your child will have sufficient knowledge, ability, and self-confidence to use what you have learnt in situations ranging from deciding on the most effective way to defend yourself, to competitive bouts where you put your skills to the test against other practitioners.
More importantly, by learning how to fight, you will learn you don't need to fight and you can use other non-offensive techniques to handle yourself in tricky situations.
At the same time though, under the surface, you/your child are fostering something more critical.
At JD's DOJO, self-confidence and a sense of self-worth is encouraged, supported and nurtured.
Students are faced with challenges and adversity everyday on and off the mat - through perseverance, determination, and having a mentor who genuinely wants to see you succeed, you and/or your child will learn mindsets that will endure throughout life.
At JD's DOJO we are a team - a family - we look out for each other. We are invested in each other. We support each other's learning. We take responsibility in sharing our knowledge and growing together. We aren't here for ego. We all want to learn. We all want to succeed.
We succeed when we all succeed.
At JD's DOJO you are presented with different situations where you are taught to be critical and to assess appropriate responses.
"It's not about what happens to you, but how you respond to it that matters" (Epictetus 55-135 AD).
You are taught to think about options, not to be rash, look before you leap, be sensible and effective, think about the consequences of your actions.
At JD's DOJO students are supported to embrace their emotions - to learn ways on how to best a difficult situation and not to allow your emotions to get the better of you. You learn to ask "why?". Self-reflection. Problem-solving. Creative thinking.

At JD's DOJO healthy boundaries, accountability, taking responsibility for your own actions and for your own learning, are reinforced in all facets of what we do.
What I find so rewarding is when I see I have made a connection. I see the student's eyes light up because they just realised they have done something that they probably thought they couldn't do. Children especially have power inside of them, they just need to believe it, find it, harness it, and then let it out!
